Five Canadian Earn Appointments to AQHA Leadership Program

(Carberry, MB December 26, 2005) – The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), in conjunction with its grassroots network of affiliates, has appointed five Canadians to Leadership AQHA, a program to identify, develop and train future leaders to strengthen the American Quarter Horse industry.

The Leadership AQHA program is currently in its second year. The first year, there were a total of 10 National appointments – one of them was from Canada, Nancy (Perlich) Kenway of Lethbridge, Alberta.

The Leadership AQHA class of 2006 consists of 47 participants, of which five are from Canada. They are: Scott Carmichael of Fenwick , Ontario – representing the Ontario Quarter Horse Association; Karen Ross of Winnipeg, Manitoba – representing the Manitoba Quarter Horse Association; Donna Sagin of Swift Current, Saskatchewan – a National representative, Kathie MacKenzie of Airdrie, Alberta – representing the Quarter Horse Association of Alberta, and Rebecca Martens of Errington, British Columbia – representing the British Columbia Quarter Horse Association.

The current curriculum consists of a twelve-month program which began in October, 2005 with a training session at AQHA Headquarters in Amarillo, Texas. Participants are expected to attend one industry event, (i.e. Affiliate Management Workshop, Youth Excellence Seminar, AQHYA World Championship Show, American Horse Council Convention, Racing Conference, or the AQHA World Championship Show) – hotel/airfare at AQHA expense; participate in on-line training and case studies to further knowledge and understanding of AQHA; and attend the 2006 AQHA Convention – at their own expense.

Karen Ross, 59, of Winnipeg, MB has been employed in Aboriginal Education at Churchill High School for thirteen years. Ross said, “I have always ridden horses. I think I started as young as four-years-old. At the tender age of five I became a “horse thief” and actually rode off and disappeared on a horse that belonged to someone else. Of course, I had to give it back. I have owned and raised numerous horses over the years as an adult and showed at Open and AQHA shows. A few years back I enjoyed Reining, but now I prefer competing as an ‘all-around’ exhibitor with my Quarter Horse gelding, Chevs High Frequincy, in the AQHA Select Amateur Division.”

Ross’s participation in the administrative side of the horse industry began as a leader in the 4-H Light Horse Program. She was involved for more than five years, and was one of the founders of the annual Manitoba 4-H Provincial Light Horse Championship Show. She has served numerous terms on the Boards of Directors of the Manitoba Quarter Horse Association, the Canadian Western Horse Association, and the Manitoba Horse Council.

Ross said, “Many things appealed to me about applying as a Manitoba affiliate representative to the Leadership AQHA program. And, I am proud to be representing MQHA. I am interested in strengthening the AQHA in Manitoba, as I consider it the best organization I have ever been involved with. Both these associations ensure that we treat our horses decently and I am very proud of the condition, kindness and humane treatment of horses that I see at AQHA/MQHA shows and events. This program’s orientation was a great learning experience. We gained understanding of our own leadership strengths and weaknesses. We discussed challenges facing the industry and began to discuss developing solutions. I look forward to a very informative year and hope to give back to the AQHA and my provincial affiliate.”
