EHV-1 Alert

The Manitoba Quarter Horse Association has just been made aware that a horse exposed to Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) was present at the MQHA Thanksgiving Classic Quarter Horse Shows held October 8-9-10, 2011 in Brandon. It should be noted that the exposed horse showed NO symptoms either at the show, nor since returning home, and its temperature is continuing to be monitored four times daily by the owner and attending veterinarian.

However, the exposed horse came from a farm where two horses have recently been euthanized, one of which has been tested and confirmed as EHV-1 positive, the other euthanized horse's test is incomplete at this time. For more information regarding EHV-1 please visit the CQHA website to read the Equine Canada health bulletin http://www.cqha.ca/pdf/2011_ec_ehwc_evh_june-14.pdf

This notice is being circulated to alert all horse owners/exhibitors present at the MQHA Thanksgiving Quarter Horse Shows October 8-10th, to recommend they monitor their horses for signs of illness, especially a sudden onset spike in temperature, and then immediately contact their veterinarian to begin treatment. Early treatment following the first spike in temperature is critical for a full recovery.

We have been advised by the Keystone Centre facility that they have completed sanitizing the facilities, as of last night, should you be planning to bring horses to participate at the 2011 Wheat City Stampede this coming weekend.

The organizers of the Wheat City Stampede this weekend, are proceeding with their weekend's activities as planned. Their attending veterinarian has suggested that all participants practice and be diligent with their horse's hygiene.
