Sincere condolences to the family and friends on the
passing of Rick Payne, Winnipeg, MB. Richard Douglas Payne, 64, passed away suddenly
on November 18, 2011 at Grace Hospital, in Winnipeg. Rick is survived
by his wife Kathryn, daughters Dawn and Carol and two grandchildren.
Rick's
entrepreneurial spirit began during his teenage years and he sold his
first business, the Portage & Maryland Shell station, to become a
farrier. Soon after he managed and then purchased Westgate's Horse
Centre, which grew to become one of the largest equestrian centres in
the prairies, operating until 1996.
Rick excelled in both English and Western disciplines: riding,
training, coaching and developing young riders. He enjoyed great
success in showing cutting horses nationally and internationally as
well as coaching hunter and jumper competitors up to the North American
Young Riders level. During these years, Rick opened a small tack shop
as part of the Westgate facility. Other business ventures followed
including a national distribution company for wholesale equestrian
equipment and later an expansion of his retail tack shop operations
including southern Saskatchewan and north western Ontario locations. In
2009, Rick shifted gears towards retirement, including cattle and
haying activities on the farm where he raised his family and spending
winters at his second home in Arizona during the winter months.
Throughout
the years Rick worked tirelessly as a volunteer to improve the profile
of the equestrian sport. He served as Vice President of the Canadian
Equestrian Federation (now Equine Canada), and led the development of
the first Western Coaching Certification Program. He was a founding
director of the Manitoba Riding for the Disabled, which ran its
programs at Westgate for 15 years. During the Pan Am Games in 1999,
Rick served as an advisor to the Facilities Committee for the events
held at the Red River Exhibition Park. At the time of his passing, Rick
held a executive position on the Board with the Park.
A
memorial service was held at Assiniboia Downs on Portage Avenue in
Winnipeg, on November 24, 2011. For those wishing to do so, donations
in Rick's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
