MQHA/MQHYA Youth Grassroots Show Program

The Manitoba Quarter Horse Youth Association is pleased to continue its Grassroots Show Program for 2008. The purpose of this program is to promote good horsemanship, sportsmanship and comradeship among youth, regardless of the breed of horse/pony being shown, at an affordable price to show. Five new Grassroots classes may be offered: Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, and Trail, at participating AQHA-approved Quarter Horse Shows in Manitoba (if agreed to by the host show committee.) Shows offering Grassroots classes at this time are: the MQHA Summer Sizzler Quarter Horse Shows – June 13th, 14th & 15th and the Thanksgiving Classic Quarter Horse Shows – October 11th – 12th & 13th.  Other AQHA-approved shows are being invited to sign on to this program and we will highlight this in upcoming MQHA news columns in Horse Country Magazine and on the MQHA website.

Depending on entries, Grassroots classes may be split/combined as 13 years & under and 14-18 years of age. Exhibitors will pay NO ENTRY FEES to show in these five Grassroots classes. However, charges for all stall fees, office fees, and/or other AQHA approved youth or open division class fees will apply. Some shows may be double-judged, therefore two sets of fees will apply (1 judge/day=1 show; 2 judges/day=2 shows).

To qualify as a Grassroots exhibitor, youth must be 18 years of age and under as of January 1st of current year. He/she may exhibit a grade horse/pony or any registered breed of horse, providing that he/she has not earned any points at a breed show, in their lifetime, at the time of registering for the Grassroots Show Program each year. Youth exhibitors must be current year MQHYA members and Manitoba Horse Council members (or have valid out-of-province horse federation insurance). Grassroots exhibitors must complete a horse identification form and submit to the Grassroots project. The current year’s AQHA Handbook of Rules & Regulations will also apply to Grassroots classes, including the use of rider equipment, tack, and/or attire.

Grassroots exhibitors will collect points on a one horse/one exhibitor basis. MQHYA High Point Year End Awards will be given to MQHYA members for each of the five individual Grassroots classes. To qualify for Grassroots High Point All-Around MQHA Year End Awards exhibitors must enter Showmanship at every show in which they participate, and they must also be members of the MQHA (parent association). For more information about this MQHYA Grassroots Program, please contact: Alana VanLoo, MQHA Youth Director (204) 877-3747 or Karen Plett, MQHYA Youth Advisor (204) 326-1420.
